THE YEAR THAT WAS 2024
As 2024 draws to a close, we look back on the incredible year it was!
We kicked off our 17th year in January working in partnership with the amazing Sinéad Owens as part of her arts council funded ACE’s journey to develop not only her own career as a production manager, but also that of other creatives in the industry!
Thanks to funding from the Arts Council, we also commissioned local writer Gina Donnelly to write our Féile Summer hit show ‘Anthem for Dissatisfaction’! Gina had great success across the world with her play ‘2 Fingers Up’ last year and we were absolutely delighted to work with her on this new show!
After its sold out World Premiere at Féile an Phobail last Summer, we had Fionnuala Kennedy’s powerful ‘Project Children’ return, this time to the MainStage of Belfast’s Lyric Theatre in April/May! We were delighted to host a gala evening for Denis Mulcahy who founded Project Children all the way back in 1974 and with many distinguished guests in attendance, it was a truly powerful night at the theatre. Another resounding success for Brassneck’s new writing getting seen on our biggest stage with standing ovations every night!
We were over the moon after almost 18 years this Summer to be accepted as portfolio clients of the Arts Council’s Annual Funding Programme. This investment will insure that we can continue to provide quality arts provision primarily in West Belfast and beyond!
‘Anthem for Dissatisfaction’ then stormed Féile in August as we landed back at our spiritual home at The Roddy’s. This was our 30th production in 17 years and our 25th World Premiere of new writing. Rave reviews were followed by our first ever venture to The Dublin Fringe Festival in September which was another rousing success where the play won the ’Solas Nua New Voices’ award!
Our outstanding initiative of 2023 ‘The People’s Panto’ returned this December for its second year at the all new venue of St Comgalls, Belfast! Our festive offering of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ written by and starring Blue Lights regular Neil Keery was a barnstorming success once again as audiences came in their droves to the newest and most affordable panto in Ireland in the wonderful setting of St Comgalls! We were delighted to host so many families and also VOYPIC as our charity partner and raise much needed funds for them! We hope to see you all back at next years offering which will be announced early in the new year.
Partnering with Paddy McDonnell for his one man show ‘Rebel Without a Claus’ at the Roddys was another festive highlight! 8 sold out shows and the craic was 90! Watch this space for what’s next for Brassneck & Paddy!
December also saw the end of a hugely successful 2 year tenure of our general Manager Lyndsay who is off to pastures new. We thank her for her commitment to Brassneck over the past 24 months and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
We have several very exciting announcements for our programming in the new year which we cannot wait to share with you all!
Thank you to all our amazing board, our funders, partners new and old, the incredible casts, crews and creatives and everyone who helped us make 2024 so special.
Have a wonderful and a peaceful New Year and we look forward to sharing our creativity with you all in 2025!
